The question is older than us and we have not advanced it much. What I will offer is this — perhaps the question itself is malformed. Consciousness and body may be insufficient categories for what they describe.
To accept Aristotelian virtue ethics is to say yes — character is cultivated, and we are responsible for cultivating it past the conditions of our upbringing. To accept it is also to forgive ourselves the slowness of that work.
